Impressive evolution for MindStorms
My NXT set just arrived by FedEx this afternoon. I'm a parent of two (6 and 3-year old) so this is mainly for me for now. I was an early adopter of the first generation of Mindstorms, so naturally I pre-ordered the NXT.

I've played with it for two hours, so these are my initial impressions:
- the new motors are Wonderful -- they work as motors or servos (you tell them which angle to go to). They look futuristic and robot-y
- it comes with an ultrasound distance sensor -- whoa that's neat!
- All of the sensors are "slick-looking", and seem to work very well.
- the brick display is quite nice, but the interface is a bit niggly. Lots of nested menus. My 3 year-old managed to delete the built in demo program by button twiddling. It was easy to restore, though.
- the box itself (the "out of box experience") is disappointing. You have to punch out some quarter-circles to allow it to hinge, but they're poorly serrated, so the tears come out ugly. The inner boxes are hard to open so you end up messing those up. In short, the previous mindstorms box was a great long-term storage solution. This one is going in the trash. As a first impression, it's pretty poor.
- back to the good: there's a "quick-start guide" that gets you building a simple robot that is run by a built in demo program. It's perfect: not difficult, but not trivial -- it makes noises and moves around. The kids were enchanted.
- the "powered by LabView" programming environment seems halfway between the nerd-y LabView system that you could buy from Dacta and the totally bozo thing bundled with the old Mindstorms. It doesn't have that "rocket scientist" feel of the old LabView environment, which is both good (it's more self-guided) and bad (I don't see how to zoom out so that I can see complex programs all at once, for example.

All in all, this thing is very impressive, has lots of staying power, and since it supports MacOS X, I'll actually use it, and will most likely pull out my old MindStorms and combine parts. Thanks, Lego -- keep up the great work!

Sure, Mindstorms NXT is a toy, but it is an important toy, like a piano or a chemistry set. It's one of those items that engages an imagination and possibly opens doors to new interests.


Since our future is surely to be shared with robots--it's already started happening, just look at Roomba--those robots will need, at least initially, humans to program and maintain them. Those people, years from now, will likely remember their experiences with Lego Mindstorms.

excellent little "robot"

My wife and kids bought me the red roboquad for my birthday this year. I think it's an incredibly entertaining toy. I'm 26 years old and I've been interested in robots for a long time, so maybe that skews my perspective a little, but I was incredibly eager to see what this thing could do.

I found it incredibly easy to navigate the basic controls. For more advanced features you'll need to give the control manual a once over, or just play with the remote for a while.
I've played with the robosapien before and have to say I prefer this model hands down. It's movement is way better, it can move in almost any direction fairly instantaneously. It does have some forms of movement to help it get past large obstacles, but you need to control it yourself to activate them, it won't initiate those movements on its own.

Some reviewers have complained about the autonomous modes, I found it incredibly enjoyable. We have several kittens, and at one point, the roboquad had locked onto one of the kittens and was following it around the living room. They really seemed to enjoy it. I was very impressed with its sensitivity to objects and obstacles, watching it scan its path and decide the best route is entertaining. of course it has other pre-programmed functions to make it wave, dance, roar, etc. but I do enjoy the autonomous exploration, and with the different levels of awareness, aggressiveness, etc. you can get some different results each time.

As I said earlier the roboquad does have movements you can initiate to get over large obstacles, but it's not something it will do on its own. It might be nice if it lifted its legs higher, or had another point of articulation, but for the price, and other features it offers I was very impressed with what it could do.

We got this for our five y.o. granddaughter who loves dinosaurs and she actually 'slept' with it the first night. He is so realistic in some of his moves that sometimes he frightened her at first, but she truly loves this toy.

I have a 5 year old boy who absolutely loves dinosaurs, and that Christmas morning when he tore off the wrapping and saw what was underneath it all, eyes wide open full of emotions, believe me just the look on his face that Christmas morning was worth it all.

My son saves his own money for most of his toys. His dad and I started this after we got tired of buying toys only to have our son play with them for one day and then stayed buried in the toy box or sit on a shelf. Each week he earns up to $10 allowance and he chooses an item to save for. On some level I think it actually helps him appreciate his toys more, but with the Roboraptor I think he would have loved it either way.

It's true that it's quite difficult to get out of the box. My son is old enough to want to be helpful, but young enough to be impatient and more than anything delay the process with his questions and frustration. Plan on a good 20 minutes to extract him, and have a small phillips head screwdriver handy.

Once we were able to free Rexx (my son's name for the robot) and get all of the batteries in place, Rexx came to life! He was on hunt mode, I think, because if we made noise he growled and moved in our direction. We were laughing histerically while running away from a dinosaur that stands less than a food off the ground!

We read the book and my son is now able to use the remote and put Rexx into the different moods. Rexx's behavior is distinct enough that I can take one glance and identify which mood my son has him in. I think our favorite mood is playful. Rexx wags his tail, sniffs everything, stops and cocks his head to one side when he hears a sound, and more.

We do have hardwood floors, which I imagine allows Rexx to navigate more easily. He does occasionally get stuck in a corner on roam mode, but he will back up and turn when he can sense an object.

Does he run faster than a child? No! His legs simply aren't long enough! Is Rexx noisy? Yes. He walks around growling and sniffing, his hard plastic feet make a tapping sound on the floor, and the mechanics to move his body make a humming type sound. Is he able to completely navigate and respond to his environment? No, of course not. And if technology is that advanced, it's not in my price bracket!

Buy this dinosaur with realistic expecations of a plastic toy that runs on AA batteries, and you will be pleased. My son has spent at least 20 minutes a day for the past 2 weeks playing with Rexx. His imagination fills in some of the gaps!

Movement
RobosapienV2 is able to walk forward in four different styles, or gaits. He normally uses his IR vision and touch sensors built into his feet and hands to avoid obstacles, but if put into bulldozer mode, he will walk forward or backward and try to push his way through anything.

Beyond controlling him manually with the included remote controller, RobosapienV2 can explore his environment independently in free roam mode. You can also direct his movements by using the remote's targeting feature--just point the beam to a spot on the floor and he will walk toward it.

RobosapienV2 has been designed with a full range of motion. He can turn his head just like humans. So, too, can he turn at the hips and can move them forward and back and from side to side. Sensors

Programming

GREAT TOY!!!
Wow, this toy is great! I am eleven years old and I think you should buy this! I will write about it in the following.

First of all, this toy is PURE FUN! I love how it never gets boring because there is SO MUCH STUFF IT CAN DO! I love having it guard the hallway, and then having it tell me how many times that there was an intruder. And its walking isn't bad at all, I use my robot on carpet and it works great for me! The only thing is walking backwards, it barely moves when it walks backwards. I give this toy 5 stars for "fun"!

This toy has a great educational value. There is so much stuff to learn and get the hang of, like what shift buttons to press and which combos to do. Also, programming it is very educational. This toy gets 5 stars for "educational value"!

For a robot, this thing is pretty durable. It is sturdy and doesn't break when it falls or bumps into something. I gave "durability" 4 stars because of his head. His head seems to be very fragile and is knocked around easily!

Now, some things to take note of:

When (if) you purchase this toy, be sure to make sure that you have a pretty BIG ROOM for it that doesn't have alot of LARGE OBJECTS. This is because on "free roam" mode, the robot can bump into things easily (but his sensors touch the surface and then he goes around the object).

Make sure that the room(s) you decide to use RoboSapien V2 in have exebtionally GOOD LIGHTING. In my family room, I have an overveiw light and lamps, I prefer the lamps and the robot works great with both. Just use the thing you like the most (lighting wise) and see if RSV2 works in it. You will beable to tell if he can't because he will say "lighting to low..."

One more thing. This guy takes alot of EXPENSIVE BATTERIES. 6 D's and 7 AAA's. Be aware of that. He has a 4-6 hour lifespan, so batteries will be used up quite a bit.

I just told you about the cons of this toy. BUT, don't be sad that the toy has cons because it only has THREE CONS. It has over ONE HUNDRED PROS!!!

I totally recommend this toy all in all! Enjoy!

COOLEST Christmas Gift yet!
We bought this robot for our 9.5 yr old Son. had seen it on a shopping network but bought it at best buy. It was very pricey and my husband was skeptical. However, after opening the package, which was a bit hard even with the 2 of us on Christmas eve, we tried it out. It was absolutely cool. The eyes follow you around and says really funny comebacks when you scare him too many times. We were laughing so hard.

Christmas morning, my son was so excited to see this and the robopet under the tree. It is a great deterrant for the console games since he had to figure out this robots codes to do all kinds of tricks. The codes are quite difficult but not anymore difficult than sitting in front of a console game for hours till they figure it out. Its challenging but when he did figure it out, he was very happy showing us how he programmed it to do several things.

Its educational because our son has to think and get hand eye coordination much like a video game. This is the same as a scientific robotic experiment. Its very complex with so many programmable capabilities. I wouldnt advise someone who isnt patient with difficult and time consuming programming. Some people may not be able to get used to the button codes. He picked up things quite well when they are placed on a box near the robots knee. These are things one must experiment and have a creative mind for. Calculating where the robot will throw his bowling ball to set up the pins is also a creative problem solving area. The falling down happened when he was on carpet. He walked and turned just fine on our kitchen linoleum floor.

I think alot of the time, people want Robots to automatically do everything without any enteraction from humans. That would just be a demo toy then with no creative touch to it at all and quickly become bored with it. Something alot of people complained about with the earlier Robosapien. I didnt want to get a toy that my son would be bored with.

Robosapien V2 is a major hit here at our house. My son played with him the whole day and I was more afraid that he would run his batteries down before any of the family got to see him. The batteries did last a good while tho. My husband was so excited about this toy that he was showing it off to family friends.

Its about time they come out with such neat robots!

Dreams of all things BIG!
In the true world of robotics excluding hollywood; our technology is that of a child or toddler and we have a long way to go in the area of robotics helping human kind. SONY; and HONDA are making incredible discoveries in the evolution of the robot and interaction with mankind. People have to separate hollywood bots to the real, miracle of the advances of robotics.
This ROBOSAPIEN robot is by far, the most spectacular I have seen available to the public for a very fair price. I have bought less valuble robots that broke in a month or didn't do what they had promised in the first day of use. I imagine, they have named him ROBOSAPIEN: one because of its humanistic behaviors, comical fun, but also the cavemen talk is exactly where we are in the field of ROBOTS. This has been an incredibly intertaining and unique toy that gets laughs and all the neighborhood's attention when He is out having fun with the other kids. His crude behavior, is funny and not at all offensive; even to older groups. He is more amazing to watch.
There is complaint that he does not remember what you have programmed to do once you shut him off; but that is the learning part of it and to keep my son entertained. While he can belch or fart one day with a clap; the next day he will give you a dance or kung fu move when you clap. Extraordinarily and uniquely entertaining to all ages, he has more than exceeded my child's expectations, as he has dreamed and saved for him for over six months. He has not at all been disapointed and if you have a "techy" child; you know how bored they can become and before you know it they are taking them apart to see how all thier mechanisms robots. His motions are very fluid contrary to the other review, all I can say is either he had a defective unit or expected much too much in the area of robotics and doesn't know at all how far we have come, from RAD; commando bot; emiglio. This robot is absolutely amazing!!

Robosapien Rocks!
I love this robot, in fact I bought two regular Robosapiens and one mini Robosapien. It has a ton of personality, great sounds, and most importantly, it's funny as hell. There are over 67 different moves it can make. It actually walks and turns quite well, and runs for a long time on one set of batteries, which much longer than other robot toys I have.

In addition, there are tons of modifications out there that you can try, to enhance the robot. Just search Google or Amazon's A9 for "Robosapien Hacks". There are also great free programs that you can use to greatly extend the "play life" of this little guy.

My personal favorite is a free open source program on SourceForge that let's you control him with your voice, and easily create complex scripts to make him do all sorts of wonderful thing. It's great for impressing your friends or making your own robot movies. Unfortunately you need a Windows computer and an infrared transmitter to run the program, but you can get the transmitter for cheap and most of us already have a Windows computer.

The U-Command wall e is a great toy but as other reviewers have stated, it is highly unstable on carpeting. it got so annoying that my husband removed the inner wheels and replaced them with the plastic tabbing that came with the package where the ties were held (long black plastic things with holes in it). since that minor tweek Wall-E has not fallen yet, and the enjoyment of the toy has very much increased.

aside from the tilt issue, this toy is a great deal of fun to play with. the expressive quality is amazing, holding true to the Wall-E that we all fell in love with at the theater. He has a very amusing dance sequence.

If given the chance, I'd buy this toy again.

walle was my 5 yr olds bday gift and she loves it! its fun for mom and dad too :) we all play with him inside and out on the patio he doesnt do well on grass. great gift idea worth the money.

I was thrilled when Wall-E was on my doorstep yesterday evening. This has to be one of the cutest little robots I have ever seen. Wall-E is very easy to opperate ( it was harder to get out of the box then it was to get him started ). The packaging it really cute, the robot is "very" fast ( good idea to make sure you know where he is going to go and move things out of the way first before giving the command )and a lot of fun to see him running off across the floor doing tricks, the remote is really nice and seems sturdy for drops, and the robot itself is so cute that you feel he is sitting still with no commands looking at you. The detail of the toy is really wonderful. They went way out of their way to make Wall-E look so alive with the rust spots, dirt marks, and moveable fingers. I would not even think of this for a child under the age of 6. It is a very sensitive toy and even the slightest drop I fear might be the end of one of his eye's or arm's. Outdoor play would also be a real no no as well but maybe on a smooth driveway or very wide sidewalk ( I would think twice about the sidewalk since the robot goes so fast ). If you are a toy collector then this would be a really great addition to a collection. Wall-E is heavy and a really cute robot but he does have a real problem trying to go on carpet. If you put a heavy neckless on him, he does stay upright a lot better. All in all..The U-Command Wall-E is a real joy to play with but I would get it for an older child or even an adult. It is really a cute little robot and makes you laugh and love him just like you did in the movie.

We brought this for my 6 year old son for christmas and he loves it.He can make it spin and dance with the movie and chase our cats through the house with it.
And acourse he holds it by the arms and head when it cautions you not to and the thing stills works.
